How Listening to Leslie Knope Changed My Life

How Listening to Leslie Knope Changed My Life

“As you navigate through the rest of your life, be open to collaboration.  Other people and other people’s ideas are often better than your own. Find a group of people who challenge and inspire you, spend a lot of time with them, and it will change your life.”

-       Amy Poehler

Three years ago, I didn’t know what a mastermind was.  Today, I know that my accomplishments over the last two years are attributable in many ways to the focus, accountability, and development that a mastermind provided.  In short, Amy Poehler (or, as I prefer to think of her, Leslie Knope) is right.  Let me back up.

Make 2019 Different (and by Different I mean Great)

Make 2019 Different (and by Different I mean Great)

Everything old is new again.  What popular 1930’s trend is back in vogue today?

I’ll give you a hint.  Historically successful leaders like Franklin D. Roosevelt, Walt Disney, and Thomas Edison (all old, white guy business leaders)  and even author and creative J.R.R. Tolkien, were famous for participating.  The result of their participation was exponential growth in their businesses and pursuits and the “diversity” of thought they obtained from participation helped them accomplish far more than they ever could have alone.

Video of the Week...November 27, 2018

Have you received enough Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday emails? Did you wake up this morning to realize that Cyber Monday seems to be extended? Are you bored or frustrated with your technology devices?

Numbing boredom with digital devices can hinder your creativity.  In this week’s Video of the Week, tech podcaster Manoush Zomorodi explains why a little boredom can help you be more creative, and explains a challenge that can help you get your tech usage out of the way of your own creativity.

You've had the Thanksgiving feast...now it is Cyber Monday!

You've had the Thanksgiving feast...now it is Cyber Monday!

You’ve had the Thanksgiving Feast...

Stood in line for the deals of the century...

Took a nap over the weekend and watched a game, binge watched that show you have been wanting to watch, or spent time with friends or family...

And now?

You are back at work.

Things haven’t changed since before the holiday, have they?  They probably won’t change in the new year either.  In fact, they probably haven’t changed for a long time now, right?

Are you ready to move your career to the next level?

Around the holidays we tend to think more about gratitude and the people and things for which we’re thankful. Expressing that gratitude is important for you personally, and for your personal and professional relationships. In time for Thanksgiving, this week’s Video of the Week is a TedXBellevue talk by former professional baseball player Mike Robbins on "The Power of Appreciation.” It focuses on the important distinction between "recognition" and "appreciation.”

Understanding the distinction between them allows you to have much more impact, meaning, and productivity in your life and with the people around you. He also discusses how to maintain a habit of expressing appreciation, how to accept a compliment, and important research in the field of positive psychology. He also shares what it felt like as a professional pitcher when he was pulled off the mound mid-game. You’ll view appreciation in a whole new light — and be less likely to taunt an exiting pitcher in the future.

Coaching isn’t just for athletes — a coach can help you advance much more quickly in your career, regardless whether you’re a lawyer, a manager, a salesperson, or not sure what’s next for you.  As surgeon Atul Gawande explains in this week’s Apochromatik Video of the Week, great coaches “are your external eyes and ears, providing a more accurate picture of your reality.  They’re recognizing the fundamentals.  They’re breaking your actions down and then helping you build them back up again.”

Performance Reviews: The Best Investment of Your Time

Performance Reviews: The Best Investment of Your Time

This week I look at the review process from the manager or supervisor side of the desk.  If you have been invested in your career for several years you likely have at least one direct report.  That means you are in a small way responsible for helping them progress in their career through effective feedback that allows them to advance in their career, find their focus, and improve their weaknesses.  This week we look at the “management” side of the review process to ensure you are doing your job to improve the performance of those who work for you and improve the organizations overall performance and effectiveness.

Giving feedback can be complicated and a missed opportunity,  which is why we are often hired to teach supervisors how to give meaningful and effective feedback.  It’s also the topic for this week’s Video of the Week and blog post.  In this week’s video, in less than three minutes Michael Mauboussin, author of The Success Equation, shares four tips to help you give meaningful feedback.

If you have more time, check out this bonus video on how and why to give negative feedback.  It’s short (less than 90 seconds) and may change the way you view giving negative feedback.  Your employees will thank you.

And be sure to check back Thursday for a post on how to give feedback.

Feedback...

Feedback...

One of our most popular trainings is on how to solicit and respond to feedback, both during and outside the formal review context.  (We also train supervisors on how to give meaningful feedback.)  As we speak to people who have made time to attend a training on making the most of feedback, we often hear that they are “too busy” to prepare for their review.  As we always say, that’s like saying “I was so busy packing for vacation that I didn’t have time to book a plane ticket.”  Your review may be the one time all year when you and your boss both carve out time to sit and talk about your career.  Don’t let this opportunity pass you by.

One of our most popular training topics is feedback — both how to give feedback (for supervisors) and how to solicit and react to feedback (for everyone).  With annual review time quickly approaching in many offices, we’ve been busy delivering customized trainings around the country.  With the topic on so many people’s minds, this week we’re focusing on receiving feedback.  First, in today’s Video of the Week, Triad Consulting Group Founder and Harvard Law School Lecturer Sheila Heen explains why it’s critical for your career to learn to solicit, receive, and process feedback.  Her TEDxAmoskeagMillyardWomen explains that feedback is at the junction of the human need to learn and grow and the need to be accepted and respected the way we are now.  Check back for Thursday’s blog post on how to prepare for your review and how to respond to feedback you receive in your review.

One Common Mistake to Avoid in the Search for True Job/Career Satisfaction

One Common Mistake to Avoid in the Search for True Job/Career Satisfaction

Job satisfaction, and for that matter career satisfaction, can play a big role in our overall happiness.  I don’t know many people who haven’t had the Sunday evening “workweek dread” come over them around 4:00 p.m.  But if that happens to you more weeks and sometimes days than not, you might need to consider whether you have real job satisfaction.
